BMW introduces the latest, ‘M’-branded additions to its 6-series range: meet the M6 Coupe and M6 Convertible, based on M5’s platform but boasting a decidedly more fascinating design. The model uses the same frame and engine of the M5 F10, but features some unusual solution as well that confirms the new direction adopted by BMW’s Motorsport division. The Coupe comes with a CFRP roof (which allows for a lower center of mass) while the Convertible has a soft-top roof operated by a remote control button on the car key, that requires 19 seconds to open and 24 seconds to close. In the comparison with the outgoing generation, the new M6s are a good 10% more powerful and have an extra 30% of torque, whereas average fuel consumption went down by an impressive 30%.

Under the bonnet rages the well-known 4.4-litre V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology, which provides for two twin scroll turbochargers, direct injection and VALVETRONIC variable valve control system. This striking unit is credited with an output of 560 hp between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm and a massive 680 Nm (500 ft-lb) of peak torque from 1,500 up to 5,750 rpm, redlining at 7,200 rpm. The transmission is a 7-speed ‘dual clutch’ with Drivelogic, Launch Control and Low Speed Assistance systems as well as a model-specific ‘M’ gear selector that ensures the quickest gear shift possible and also paddle-shifters at the wheel to control it when in manual mode. The new M6 comes with a rear axle’s multi-plate limited-slip differential as a standard feature, while the ABS system retains its full functionality in all situations.

Performance figures are as explosive as you might expect: the 100 km/h (62 mph) mark is reached from standstill in just 4.2 seconds by the M6 Coupe and 4.3 seconds by the M6 Cabrio, while the 200 km/h (124 mph) mark gets hit in an even more impressive 12.6 (Coupe) and 13.1 seconds (Cabrio). Both variants have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), but this figure can go up to 305 km/h (190 mph) with the ‘M’ Driver’s Package. With a power-to-weight ratio of 3,3 kg/hp (7.3 lb/hp) for the Coupe and 3,5 kg/hp (7.7 lb/hp) for the Convertible, both models represent a substantial step forward from their predecessors. Average fuel consumption is rated at 9,9 litres/100 km for the M6 Coupe and 10,3 litres /100 km for the M6 Convertible. Introducing The All-New 3rd Generation BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ –The iconic M6 returns from a two year hiatus more powerful, more athletic, more focused, more luxurious and more efficient than ever before. Since the “M6″ badge was first placed on a BMW back in 1987, this iconic model has exemplified the luxury and daily usability of a top range BMW coupe combined with true super-car performance. Now, in its 3rd generation, the all-new BMW M6 will again be offered as a 4-seat Coupe and Convertible.

The new 2012 BMW M6 Convertible will be the first to arrive in US BMW Center showrooms in June 2012. The BMW M6 Coupe will arrive at US BMW Centers in the late Summer of 2012 as a 2013 model. US Pricing, technical specification, EPA mileage ratings, standard and optional equipment will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

Like its sedan brother the M5, the new M6 models are high-performance sports cars whose exceptional dynamic potential is geared squarely towards the demands of track use. At the same time, the M6 sets new benchmarks in daily driving comfort, innovative features and fuel efficiency.

In order to achieve these lofty performance goals, the new BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible share the most powerful engine ever fitted in a series-produced model from BMW M GmbH mated to a high-torque 7-speed M-Double Clutch Transmission (M-DCT). An innovative Active M Differential which optimizes power transfer between the rear wheels. This drivetrain, combined with extensive chassis and suspension upgrades ensure that the engine’s performance can be transferred to the ground.

The engine: High-Revving V8 Engine with M TwinPower Turbo Technology.
The new engine shared by the BMW M5 and M6 has the highest output ever generated by a BMW M car, and at the same time provides the most efficient balance between performance and fuel consumption. It is characterized by immediate throttle response, a linear power band and an unusually high and flat torque curve. The new engine produces around 10% higher output than the V10 engine of its predecessors and torque is up by over 30%. At the same time, fuel consumption and CO2 are expected to be reduced by approximately 30%.

To achieve the performance levels demanded by the M6, the engineers at BMW M started with the proven BMW M developed V8 engine from the BMW X5 M - X6 M (internally known as the S63) and further developed it for its duty in the latest M5 and M6 models. Internally designated as the S63Tü this new engine uses similar M Twin Power technology combined with the reverse flow V8 layout. The result is that the high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo Technology lends a whole new intensity to the powerful thrust at higher rev ranges for which M cars are known. The 4.4-liter engine develops a peak output of 560 hp (412 kW) at 5,750 – 7,000 rpm (versus 555 hp at 6,000 rpm for the S63), while its maximum torque of 500 lb-ft (680 Nm) is on tap between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm (versus 500 lb-ft from 1,500 to 5650 rpm for the S63). The rev limiter intervenes at 7,200 rpm (up 200 rpm from the S63 engine). The rev band, which offers extremely dynamic acceleration between peak torque and the availability of maximum output, is therefore almost three times as wide as that of the V10 engine in the previous generation M6.

As in the V-8 engine of the X5 M, the two twin-scroll turbochargers are placed (along with the catalytic converters) in the V-space between the two cylinder banks in a reverse flow layout. This layout results in an unusually compact engine where the intake is moved outboard and the exhaust inboard – the opposite of conventional V-engines. The lengths of intake and exhaust tracts are thereby reduced and their diameters increased, reducing pressure losses - especially on the exhaust side. A further advantage of the layout is the short distance between the cylinders’ combustion chambers and the primary catalytic converters; this leads to quicker warm-up of the catalysts after the engine is started and therefore lower start-up emissions.
The patented cross-bank exhaust manifold, first introduced in the S63 engine of the X5 M is also employed in the S63Tü. This exhaust manifold is a special 8-into-4 setup that combines the exhaust from two cylinders (on opposite banks) that are 360˚ of crankshaft rotation apart from each other. Each of the eight runners is of identical length to ensure perfectly regular timing of exhaust gas pulses.

Each of the four manifold outlets is fed into each of the four available scrolls of the two twin-scroll turbochargers. The two scrolls of a twin-scroll turbo lead each exhaust pulse directly to the turbine without feedback or interference from the other scroll (that are fed by cylinders at other points in the combustion process). Additionally, dividing the gases into two smaller paths (scrolls) results in higher gas velocity than a single larger path. This enhances the turbocharger’s response thereby reducing lag. The crossover manifold is configured so that the second scroll of the turbo is fed by two cylinders that are 180˚ out of phase with the first scroll. In this way each turbocharger receives distinct exhaust pulses every 180˚ of crankshaft rotation (from one of four cylinders). Furthermore, the two turbos receive exhaust pulses that are 90˚ offset from each other. The result is that throttle response is sharpened and turbo lag is reduced to a minimum. The new engine also sports larger intake runners, larger air to liquid intercoolers and a tuned exhaust which results in the engine making power more quickly than previously possible. Finally, the S63Tü uses a maximum boost pressure of 1.5 bar (21.7 psi) versus 1.2 bar (17.4 psi) for the S63 engine.

BMW’s efficient High Precision direct fuel injection also plays a major role in this engine’s combination of high performance and fuel efficiency. High Precision direct fuel injection ensures an extremely precise supply of fuel to the combustion chambers. Injectors positioned centrally between the valves within immediate range of the spark plugs spray the fuel into the combustion chambers with maximum pressure of 200 bar (nearly 3000 psi), providing smooth and clean combustion. Innovative solenoid valve injectors in the new BMW M6 engine use multiple injections per combustion cycle to achieve an extremely precise mixture preparation. The fuel also has a cooling effect on the combustion that allowed the M engineers to endow the engine with a high compression ratio of 10:1. This high compression ratio contributes to both performance and efficiency, while reducing exhaust emissions – and even has a positive effect on engine sound.

Throughout its history, the heart of the BMW M5 and M6 has been its high-revving, high output-per-liter engine fed by individual throttle plates. The new engine introduces VALVETRONIC variable valve control system to a BMW M engine – effectively providing 16 individual throttles.

VALVETRONIC is BMW’s patented fully variable valve control system that eliminates the need for conventional throttles. Engine power is instead controlled directly by varying the amount of lift of the intake valves. Pumping losses are minimized with this system and resulting in efficiency and torque improvements. VALVETRONIC has also sharpened the responsiveness of this engine compared to the V10 engine it replaces.

The M TwinPower Technology of the new V8 engine also includes BMW’s Double VANOS 1 infinitely-variable valve timing system which optimizes the engine’s efficiency and generates high torque at low engine revs. In addition, a volume-controlled oil pump and a range of other EfficientDynamics measures deliver an extra boost to efficiency. The new BMW M6 features both Brake Energy Regeneration and the Auto Start-Stop function, which automatically switches off the engine when the car comes to a stop.

The engine’s exhilarating thrust gives the new BMW M6 models impressive acceleration. The instant power delivery and sustained thrust of the engine results in an acceleration of 0– 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.2 seconds for the Coupe and 4.3 seconds for the Convertible. The sprint from 0–124 mph (0-200 km/h) takes only 12.6 seconds for the Coupe and 13.1 for the Convertible. The top speed of both models is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). While the engine’s output has increased by around 10% and maximum torque is up by more than 30%, the new BMW M6 models consume roughly 30% less fuel and have substantially higher range than their predecessors.

M TwinPower Turbo Technology also shapes the development of the V8 engine’s soundtrack. The concept of crossover exhaust manifolds plays a key role in delivering a multi-layered collage of sound. The twin-tailpipe exhaust system of the new BMW M6 runs largely in a straight line and has a large cross section. The two exhaust pipes feed into a single muffler from which the customary M quad tailpipes extend out through the far left and right-hand sides of the rear diffuser.

7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic
The new V8 engine M TwinPower Turbo engine is mated to a newly developed 7-speed double-clutch transmission designed to handle the high torque and high revving nature of the engine. The M DCT with Drivelogic System developed especially for the new M6 has been tuned to the performance characteristics of the engine. It delivers exceptionally fast and clean gear changes in both automatic mode (D) and manual mode (S). No clutch pedal is required for manual gearshifts and the driver can keep their foot on the accelerator during gear changes. The driver uses the model-specific M gear selector to choose between D and S mode and to engage reverse. Comfort is further enhanced by the new Low Speed Assistance function, which smoothes power delivery in stop-and-go traffic with a light touch of the accelerator pedal.

The transmission offers a sequential shift pattern for the manual gearshift mode. Alternatively, the driver can also change gears manually using the shift paddles on the newly developed M leather steering wheel, complete with multifunction buttons and gearshift paddles. In typical M configuration, the driver pulls the right-hand paddle to shift up and the left-hand paddle to shift down. The new M steering wheel stands out with its smaller rim diameter and a design that borrows from the double-spoke design of the M light-alloy wheels.

M DCT with Drivelogic offers three shift programs in both automatic and manual mode. The driver selects his/her desired mode using the rocker switch positioned immediately below the shift lever on the center console. The D1 program is selected automatically when the engine is started, tailoring gear selection to deliver the most efficient possible driving style. D2 mode supports laid-back cruising with gear changes carried out according to engine revs and load. And, to promote a sporty driving style laced with dynamic acceleration, shift times in D3 mode are set up to delay gear changes until the engine has climbed higher up the rev range.

Drivers can also adapt the shift characteristics to their requirements in Manual mode. S1 mode generates comfortable and smooth gear changes. In S2, the gear changes are completed noticeably faster and accompanied by significant shift kick at higher revs. S3 is the one to choose for maximum driving dynamics; it enables even sportier gear changes and is required to initiate the Launch Control function. When the stability control system is switched off, Launch Control allows the driver to achieve maximum acceleration from a standstill as permitted by conditions. During Launch Control acceleration, each gear shift takes place automatically and at the optimum engine speed.

Active M Differential.
The Active M Differential in the new M6 is an electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential programmed to optimize traction, stability and sporting character.

The rear axle’s multi-plate limited-slip differential works with high precision and speed. Its control unit is connected with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system via FlexRay high-speed data transfer technology and constantly cross-checks the data collected by its sensors with the feedback from DSC. It then uses this information to calculate the locking force required to deliver optimum traction and stability. The data recorded by DSC sensors is also passed on if the stability control system is in MDM mode or is switched off. The locking force within the differential can be varied continuously between 0 and 100%. The ABS system retains full functionality in all situations.

In addition to the data provided by DSC, the Active M Differential’s control unit also takes into account the position of the accelerator pedal, the rotational speed of the wheels and the car’s yaw rate. Every driving situation is therefore analyzed so that any loss of traction on one side of the car is identified at an early stage. The degree of lock is adjusted as required within a fraction of a second, enabling wheel spin to be prevented on slippery surfaces, when the right and left rear wheel have widely differing friction coefficients and in tight corners. Optimizing traction in this way also provides unbeatable driving stability in challenging conditions and allows impressive acceleration out of corners. The Active M Differential can also unlock just as quickly to stabilize the car off-throttle.

M-Specific Chassis
Each component in the suspension and chassis of the new M6 has been developed based on the extensive race expertise of BMW M engineers. The integral rear axle subframe in the M6 is rigidly bolted to the body to maximize body rigidity and handling precision. Reinforced chassis mountings at the front and rear axles ensure that dynamic forces are passed through to the body structure. Specially tuned axle kinematics and newly developed forged aluminum suspension components boasting impressive strength and minimized weight meet both the requirements of everyday road driving and the specialized demands of track use. The result is that the BMW M6 continues the BMW M tradition of engineering a chassis that is “faster than the engine”. As with every BMW M car, the engineers carried out the fine-tuning during extensive testing on the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit.

Dynamic Damper Control (DDC) electronically controlled shock absorbers are standard on the new BMW M6. DDC uses electro-hydraulic damping force adjustment to provide a set-up suited to the driving situation and the wishes of the driver. The shock settings can be adjusted at the touch of a button. In “Comfort” mode, the dampers respond adaptively to the condition of the road surface and the driver’s style. “Sport” mode activates a noticeably stiffer damper set-up, while “Sport Plus” allows further stiffening of the suspension to achieve maximum longitudinal and lateral acceleration in ultra-dynamic driving situations.

At the touch of a button, the driver can also select from three settings for the M-specific Servotronic speed-sensitive power steering. “Comfort” mode requires only a small amount of steering force when parking or maneuvering, but still provides the M brand’s hallmark direction-changing precision at higher speeds. “Sport” ensures the driver enjoys more intensive feedback across all speed ranges. “Sports Plus” is the highest level of steering dynamics that can be selected where the driver is called on to use even greater force with the steering wheel.

The new BMW M6 also uses BMW’s most advanced Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) that includes Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake Assistant, brake fade compensation, a Brake Drying function and Start-off Assistant. The DSC system has three levels of operation. The default is “DSC On” which provides the greatest level of stability and traction control. M Dynamic Mode (MDM) can be activated to override the basic setting by pressing the DSC button on the center console. This mode allows for very spirited driving – as on a race track – while still providing a safety net, by raising the intervention thresholds of DSC. “DSC Off” mode can also be activated at the touch of a button for complete deactivation of the system.

High-Performance Brake System
The high-performance braking system of the new BMW M6 guarantees outstanding stopping power matching the overall performance of the car. The typical BMW M compound rotors have been further improved for the new M6. These rotors thermally separate the central hub (constructed of aluminum) and the vented/cross drilled cast iron rotors. As a result, the rotors are free to expand and contract without warping. The diameter of the brake rotors is 15.7 inches (400 mm) at the front and 15.6 inches (396 mm) at the rear. The six-piston fixed calipers are radially bolted to the pivot bearing and are painted dark blue metallic complete with the M logo. Together, the brake system has been tested to provide exceptional performance, fade resistance and pedal feel.

The new BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible will be the first cars in the history of BMW M to be offered with optional M Carbon-Ceramic brakes (in conjunction with 20-inch M light-alloy wheels as of July 2012 production). These new brakes are without parallel and take the cars stopping power to another new level – especially at the race track. The brake rotors measure 16.1 inches (410 mm) in diameter at the front and 15.6 inches (396 mm) at the rear. Made from a carbon-fiber ceramic compound, the rotors boast even greater resistance to heat combined with significantly reduced rotating masses. The M Carbon-Ceramic brakes are 42.8 lb (19.4 kg) lighter than the standard brakes, yet the innovative material also displays exceptional resistance to wear, and the operating life of the rotors is many times that of conventional equivalents. The optional M Carbon-Ceramic system also sees six-piston fixed radial calipers at the front teamed with single-piston floating calipers at the rear. The M Carbon-Ceramic system can be easily identified through the wheels by the special gold-colored calipers.

The standard M6 wheel and tire combination is a 19 inch M specific light alloy wheels fitted with 265/40 R19 ultra-high performance summer tires in the front and 295/35 R 19 tires at the rear. 20 inch forged M light-alloy wheels can be ordered as an option.

Design: athletic aura, powerfully taut surfaces, elegant lines.
Classical proportions, the sporty yet elegant lines of the BMW 6 Series and the familiar design language of BMW M Automobiles form the foundations for the body design of the BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible. Powerfully taut surfaces and precise contours underline the athletic aura of the two models. In addition, a model-specific interpretation of hallmark M styling cues includes design details which are influenced directly by technical considerations – such as the cooling air required, chassis geometry and aerodynamics – and therefore further highlight the cars’ outstanding performance attributes.

Wide air intakes, stunningly contoured headlight units and large, smooth surfaces shape the front view of the new BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible. Another eye-catching element of the car’s nose is its newly designed M kidney grille, which bears an “M6″ badge – an homage to the first generation M6. The grille’s black, paired kidney grille slats take their cues from the characteristic double-spoke design of the M light-alloy wheels. The 30 millimeter (1.2 inch) increase in track width over the two cars’ respective 6 Series stablemates is complemented by powerfully flared front wheel arches, which sit flush with the wheels. This extra width offers a clear nod to the optimized roadholding of these high-performance sports cars. The three-dimensional shaping of their air intakes and race-inspired flaps designed to control airflow to the outer air intakes also underlines the cars’ forward-surging, dynamic character.

An LED accent light cuts across the tops of the standard Adaptive Xenon Headlights. The bright white, three-dimensional LED corona rings are leveled off to striking effect at the top and lower edges. Adaptive LED Headlights are available as an option on both M6 models. The LED sources in these headlights are placed on a horizontal rib running through the center of the units and feed their light into the reflectors in front of them. This ensures that the distinctive appearance of the twin circular headlights comes across clearly in every situation. The turn signals – in the form of horizontally arranged LED units – are integrated into the headlight units below the light rings.

The familiar M athleticism of both models is also clearly visible from the side. The front fenders feature familiar M gills. Their three-dimensional shape, wide chrome frames and indicator bars – which bear the M logo – give them an extremely deep-set look. In tune with the wider wheel arches, the character lines around the gills are suitably prominent. Eye-catching creases on the model-specific side skirts sweep upwards, diverting the gaze to the rear wheels. The new BMW M6 Coupe and BMW M6 Convertible are fitted with standard 19-inch M light-alloy wheels. These forged wheels feature seven double-spokes in a two-tone finish. The optional 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, meanwhile, hint at reduced weight with their five slender double-spokes and allow a clear line of sight through to the powerful brake system.

The design of the rear hints at the stable roadholding and powerful poise of the new BMW M6 models by presenting a view that broadens towards the lower section and incorporates several horizontal lines. The reflectors, positioned immediately below the L-shaped rear lights, provide an individual expression of sportiness. However, the clearest pointer to the unmistakable identity of the two high-performance sports cars are the familiar M quad exhaust tailpipes positioned on either side of the diffuser integrated into the lower area of the rear fascia.

Dynamic contours, lightweight material: the Carbon Fiber Composite roof of the BMW M6 Coupe.
Like its predecessor, the roof of the new BMW M6 Coupe is molded from natural color Carbon Fiber Composite. The dark color of the roof gives the two-door car’s silhouette a longer look, which is further emphasized by the dynamic longitudinal character lines unique to the M6 Coupe. The use of the lightweight material for the roof allows the car’s center of gravity to be lowered, enhancing agility. The standard BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line trim surrounds the side windows (or the waistline in the case of the BMW M6 Convertible) and the base and lower section of the aerodynamically optimized M exterior mirror caps.

The elegant yet aggressive look of the BMW M6 Convertible is underlined by the flying buttress architecture of the high-quality soft-top roof. Projecting into the rear section, the buttresses accentuate the car’s dynamically sweeping silhouette. The heated, vertical glass rear window, which is situated just behind the rear seats, retracts independently of the soft-top itself. The automatic opening and closing process for the roof can be activated both at a standstill and while on the move at speeds of up to 25 mph (40 km/h). The standard Comfort Access system allows the roof to be opened or closed by pressing the remote control button on the car key. It takes the roof 19 seconds to open and 24 seconds to close again.

Customers can chose from one non-metallic and eight metallic shades (including four exclusive M finishes) for the exterior paintwork of both models. The soft-top for the new BMW M6 Convertible is available in Black and Beige, or – as an option – in Anthracite Silver effect.

M-specific cockpit design: flawless car control, made-to-measure luxury.
The interior of the new BMW M6 brings together the incomparable combination of a driver-oriented cockpit design of a sports car, the spaciousness and luxurious feel of a premium automobile. Newly developed M sports seats, Merino extended leather upholstery, door sills with “M6″ lettering, an M driver’s footrest, exclusive carbon fiber interior trim and the BMW Individual roof liner in Anthracite are all standard equipment, as is the iDrive control system with a 10.2-inch Control Display. This screen is centrally positioned and like the controls in the central section of the instrument panel, slightly oriented towards the driver.

The new M Multifunction seats offer the driver and front passenger optimum lateral support while cornering, but also a high level of comfort over long distances. The lightweight seats with integrated belt system have an M-specific design headlined by extremely prominent cushion and backrest bolsters, head restraints integrated into the backrests, eye-catching stitching emphasizing the segments of the seats, and an M logo embossed into the shoulder area. The M Multifunction seats have electric height, fore/aft, side bolster and backrest angle adjustment, and also come with pneumatically adjustable lumbar support, a memory function and a manually adjustable thigh support. The M Multifunction seats are fitted with active head restraints to reduce the risk of injury in a rear-end impact.

The instrument cluster with black-panel-technology includes classic circular instruments in traditional BMW M car style, with red needles and white illumination, as well as model-specific displays and the M logo on the rev counter. The shift program currently selected and gear engaged are shown in the center of the instrument cluster. Feedback from all the drive and chassis settings selected at the touch a button are also displayed in the instrument cluster under the tachometer.

Sports Car Cockpit - Custom Tailored M Drive Buttons
On the left-hand steering wheel spoke, the driver has two M Drive buttons which can be used to call up a pre-configured setup for the car. For example, the driver can save a sporty configuration on the “M1″ button and a track focused setup (with all driver aids shut off) on the “M2″ button. The set-up selected will remain activated until it is either cancelled by pressing the button again or the driver switches to another M Drive setting. Once the system has been switched off – as when the engine is started – it reverts back to a default configuration focusing on efficiency and ride comfort.

The M Drive system in the new BMW M6 allows the driver to adjust no fewer than six parameters: the engine management, the response of the Servotronic steering system, the M DCT shift program, the DSC mode, the responses of DDC and the information in the Head-Up Display. The desired settings can be configured in any combination via the iDrive menu or by using the M Drive select buttons on the center console to set the configuration followed by pressing and holding one of the two M Drive buttons for a few seconds (until the configuration is stored). For safety reasons, a setup involving setting MDM mode or “DSC Off” requires confirmation from the driver – by pressing the M Drive button again – before it can be activated. The setup configuration selected is shown by a “M1″ or “M2″ symbol displayed in the instrument cluster.

M Head-Up Display.
The M Drive configuration also includes the information shown on the optional M Head-Up Display and projects important information onto the windshield directly in the driver’s field of vision. A full spectrum of colors is used to display graphics and symbols and the all-color capability means road sign symbols can be reproduced very realistically. In addition to a digital speed read-out, the M-specific version of the Head-Up Display also shows the gear currently engaged and a color rev counter symbol, complete with Shift Lights.

Body Structure and Safety
The hallmark M handling and occupant protection both are made possible due to the extraordinary strength of the BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible body structures. Incredibly, durable load-bearing structures and precisely defined deformation zones keep the forces released in a collision away from the extremely stiff passenger compartment. The new BMW M6 models include front and side airbags, three-point inertial reel seat belts on all seats, front belt force limiters, seat belt tensioners, and ISOFIX child seat attachments in the rear all as standard equipment. The M6 Coupe also has side curtain head airbags for both rows of seats while the M6 Convertible is equipped with roll-over protection. Positioned behind the rear head restraints, these high-strength aluminum roll bars extend automatically in a fraction of a second should there be a danger of the car rolling over.

The BMW M6 weight is minimized by an intelligent mix of materials containing a high proportion of high-tensile and ultra-high tensile steel, as well as aluminum. The hood and doors of the new BMW M6 models are made of aluminum. The front fenders on both models are molded from thermoplastic. The Coupe has the unique Carbon Fiber Composite roof panel described earlier. In addition, the trunk lids and – in the case of the BMW M6 Convertible – also the roof compartment cover, are made from the glass fiber composite material SMC (Sheet Molding Compound). With a power-to-weight ratio of 7.3lb/hp for the Coupe and 7.7lb/hp for the Convertible, both models represent a substantial step forward from their predecessors.

The new 2012 BMW M6 Convertible will be the first to reach US BMW Center showrooms in June 2012. The BMW M6 Coupe will arrive at US BMW Centers in the late Summer of 2012 as a 2013 model. US Pricing, technical specification, EPA mileage ratings, standard and optional equipment will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

South Korean manufacturer Kia releases new official images of the Track’ster concept, a prototype styled at its own Design Studio in California and described as a one-of-a-kind sporty crossover delivering unbelievably high performance. This intriguing model is being introduced to the public right now at the ongoing 2012 Chicago Auto Show, and has quickly become one of the most sought-after models of the event. This concept is supposed to be an anticipation of a future production model that combines sporty aesthetics with some quite original and peculiar technical feature, but for some reason we doubt it will be as cool as this concept.

To start with, its 2-tone Whiteout and Inferno Orange color scheme seems to be absolutely spot-on. The front end has a massive air intake placed right in the middle of the front bumper, full LED fog-lights as well as modern looking head lamps, while its exclusive 19″ alloys are fitted with Michelin performance tyres and Brembo brakes. The grille is quite reminiscent of Kia’s most recent production and the shape of the sides provides the vehicle with a quite athletic feeling. Under the bonnet we have a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox that produces 250 hp, which is a staggering 66% more than the most powerful engine currently available in the production Kia Soul’s line-up.

At the back we have the tail lights that are integrated in the rear window and a grille that retrieves the shape of the one at the front with a pair of mufflers at its sides. The sharp air-outlets on the sides of the car complete the wicked look of this concept. Inside Kia Track’ster Concept there are only two seats, with spare wheel, fire extinguisher and storage bays in place of the rear bench, just like in a rally car. However, the red/white/gray theme continues in the cabin too, and from what we can see the overall look of dashboard, wheel panels and all is just as harmonious and well-thought as the exterior. Performance Concept Kick Starts Driving Enthusiasts’ Hearts

• World debut of high-performance Soul-based concept

• Aggressive design, all-wheel drive and 250 horsepower make for a driver’s dream

CHICAGO, February 8, 2012 – What happens when a dream becomes reality? In the case of the Kia Track’ster concept unveiled at today’s Chicago Auto Show, car enthusiasts begin to salivate. Amid the driving rhythm of heavy-metal music, smoke and blinding lights, Kia Motors America (KMA) took the wraps off a performance-oriented three-door Soul coupe concept that hints at what could possibly be the future of Kia’s wildly successful Soul.

“The idea was to make the Track’ster tough looking, like a bulldog,” said Tom Kearns, chief designer for KMA. “But the car had to be approachable as well. We wanted to base the car in reality so people instantly knew it was a Soul, but with a lot of attitude. It had to be a bold interpretation that would change people’s conceptions of what a sporty Kia could be.”

Mission accomplished.

The bold attitude Kearns refers to starts with the eye-catching Whiteout and Inferno Orange paint scheme. While the white portrays complex layers and shades that contribute to dramatic depth, the orange is perfectly suited for racing. Kia’s signature grille features an air intake slit and is trimmed in lightweight carbon fiber. Smoothly integrated head lights sweep back suggestively over the sculpted front-wheel arches. The deeply recessed lenses echo the trapezoid themes found throughout the Track’ster and are accented with compelling LEDs.

Most striking up front is the Track’ster’s lower intake grille. Flanked by immense LED driving lights with billet aluminum surrounds, the Track’ster is capable of swallowing prodigious amounts of air to keep the engine running cool even under the most grueling conditions. The lower valance, trimmed in carbon fiber and accented with Inferno Orange, rides just inches off the ground and lends to the car’s menacing stance.

The Track’ster is not just another pretty face; it has a body to match. Sculpted surfaces seem to flow into each other naturally. The flanks are smooth but accented with well-defined wheel enclosures. Tucked beneath the Track’ster’s hips are custom HRE-K1 monoblock billet performance wheels that were a joint effort of Kia’s California design team and HRE. The wheels are wrapped in 245/40-19-inch front and massive 285/35-19-inch rear Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 high-performance tires. The wheelbase on the concept is stretched to 101.2 inches, almost an inch longer than the production Soul. As expected on a car with the Track’ster’s performance intentions, large 14-inch Brembo vented and cross-drilled disc brakes are embraced by six-piston calipers in front and 13.6-inch discs are paired with four-piston calipers at the rear.

Soul fans will instantly recognize the Track’ster’s angled roof, accented with Inferno Orange. Closer inspection reveals this concept, while Soul inspired, is missing the production car’s rear doors. The front doors have been lengthened and adorned with smooth billet push-style handles which echo the racing-inspired billet fuel filler door. Carbon fiber lower side valances also are accented in Inferno Orange and incorporate functional rear-brake cooling ducts. The back hatch incorporates a horizontal Inferno Orange “backpack” panel that accentuates the Track’ster’s 75.5-inch width, which is more than five inches wider than a production Soul.

With performance as the top priority, the Track’ster rolls into Chicago with a concept drivetrain sure to kick start any driving enthusiast’s heart. KMA’s design team dreamed big, but also kept their vision firmly rooted in reality. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine pumps 250 horsepower to the pavement, a 66 percent increase over that of the production Soul. Power is routed to all four wheels via an electronically controlled four-wheel-drive system. The short-throw six-speed manual transmission is capped with a stubby spherical shift lever. The Track’ster rides on a lowered sport suspension tuned for track performance.

Opening the driver’s door reveals a light and airy interior highlighted with deeply bolstered Inferno Orange suede-covered racing seats. Granite Gray leather envelopes the interior landscape and imparts a feeling of strength and stability. Granite Gray suede wraps the sport steering wheel and door panels. Located deep within red-glowing nacelles, the primary instruments are large and easily readable. Auxiliary vehicle information such as oil temperature and battery voltage is found atop the dash panel while navigation, entertainment and HVAC controls are accessed through a large touch-screen panel located just above the engine Start/Stop push-button.

Behind the front seats is where Track’ster takes a significant step away from its Soul stable mate. The rear seats have been removed and replaced with a fully integrated equipment tray and spare-tire well. “We saw the Track’ster as a performance-inspired concept that could spend time on the road and racetrack,” said Kearns. “The idea was to make the tools and equipment necessary to keep the car performing in top condition easily accessible.” Large paneled bins stow racing gear such as helmets, suits, gloves and tools while emergency supplies are housed within a separate and highly visible Inferno Orange container. A custom rear strut brace incorporates a quick-release handle to allow for fast wheel changes.

While there are no current plans to produce the Track’ster, Kia’s California design center team enthusiastically took on the project. “Concept cars are icing on the cake,” said Kearns. “They allow KMA’s design team to dream about what could be. Whether that dream becomes a reality or not is a separate question.”

One of the cars of the hour is definitely the new Aston Martin V12 Zagato, a new coupe from the British carmaker that will surely make heads turn when it will finally enter the market, and here are another four official images picturing it in all of its splendor. The car will be officially introduced to the world at the imminent Kuwait Concours d’ Elegance (February 15-18) and is expected to enter the market by the end of the current year, although only 150 units will be produced.

“We are excited to show the new V12 Zagato for the first time in production form at the Kuwait Concours d’Elegance - said Aston Martin’s CEO, Mr. Ulrich Bez - Over 50 years since the introduction of the iconic DB4GT Zagato, Aston Martin and Zagato have collaborated to create this modern interpretation which remains true to the original focus of craftsmanship, performance and exclusivity.”

The model you see in these pictures is the last special edition based on the Smart ForTwo, called ‘Sharpred’. The main distinctive feature of this model is its unusual back & red color scheme, that includes glossy black 15″ rims and grille, and will be available in both hard-top and convertible configurations. Under the bonnet will pulse the well-known 1.0-litre 3-cylider petrol engine, which is available for this model in power steps of 70 and 83 hp.

The black/red theme continues in the cabin, where we find black leather seats with contrasting red stitching and unique floor mats. The Smart ForTwo Sharpred comes with all the features of the Passion trim and will be produced in 1,800 units, all of which will come with standard panoramic roof, heated seats, sat-nav, audio system and air conditioner. The Smart ForTwo Sharpred is already available for order, with the first deliveries scheduled for May.

All good things must come to an end, and so does this excellent Lamborghini documentary with its seventh episode dedicated to the Sesto Elemento, the high-performance concept car designed by Lamborghini for the 2010 Paris Motor Show. For the ones who don’t know, the sixth element in the periodic table is carbon, which explains the name’s choice: this vehicle’s chassis, body, driveshaft and suspension are in fact made of carbon fiber, which has reduced Lamborghini Sesto Elemento’s overall weight to an astonishing 999 kilograms (2,200 lb).

And its lightness, combined with the power of its V10 motor, has enabled this concept car to reach outstanding standards in terms of performance: 0–100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration time of just 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).

Mercedes celebrates the 60th birthday of its iconic SL roadster with the release of a short clip that chronicles the whole evolution of the model, from 1952’s 300SL all the way up to the recently unveiled R231 version, with its new aluminum bodyshell (a first in Mercedes-Benz’s history).

Just as a quick reminder, the new Mercedes SL comes with a 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 306 hp and 370 Nm of peak torque (for the SL350 version) and a 4.7-litre V8 unit producing 435 hp and 700 Nm (for the SL500). Both engines use a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission.

Tesla just introduced its new Model X Concept at its headquarters in Palo Alto, California, in front of over 1000 attendants. The car is an all-electric crossover that will join the Roadster and the Model S as the third model in Tesla’s range, and has been described by its maker as ‘more responsive’ than a Porsche 911 and ‘roomier’ than an Audi Q7.

The Model X is powered by the same electric powertrain of the Model S and it can be coupled to a battery packages of 40, 60 or 85 kWh, that would provide the model with a range between 145 and 270 miles (233 and 435 km), thereby a good 10% less than the Model S. The Model X is also the first model to adopt Tesla’s Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive system, which provides for two extra electric motors giving the car a proper 4-wheel drive traction.

Design-wise, the car sports a quite captivating curvy dome and an interesting an innovative “Falcon Wing” rear doors opening system, a new take on the classic gullwing-doors concept. According to Tesla, this configuration will allow for an easier access to the rear seats. The cabin in fact can host up to seven people over three rows, and offers the same sort of electronic trickery that can be found on the Model S as well, but with better finishing. At the moment the Tesla Model S is still a prototype, but the definitive version of the car is already scheduled to enter the market in early 2013.

Citroën has released more pictures and info of the new C4 Aircross, which will be unveiled at the next Geneva Motor Show. In Europe the new crossover from the French carmaker will come with an engine line-up composed by two diesel and one petrol units: a 1.6-litre HDi engine delivering 115 hp and 270 Nm of peak torque, a 1.8-litre HDi delivering 150 hp and 300 Nm and a 1.6 petrol producing 115 hp and 152 Nm. Outside Europe, a 150 hp 2.0-litre petrol engine will also join the fold. The gasoline powertrains will make use of a 5-speed manual gearbox whereas the diesel ones will come with a standard 6-speed manual transmission.

An all-wheel drive option with three transmission modes will be made available for diesel models only: there is the 2WD mode for optimal fuel consumption, the 4WD mode which automatically distributes the torque between the front and rear axles, and the ‘lock mode’, which increases the torque transmitted to the rear wheels for more grip under severe conditions.

The Citroën C4 Aircross uses 18″ rims and a number of safety and aid systems such as hands-free access and starter, to the GPS navigation system with its touch-sensitive screen, rearview camera, transmission mode selector, USB port and Bluetooth connection for portable audio players, just to name a few. The model is expected to hit the market in the first half of the current year, but Citroen is yet to reveal its price.

The new Audi TT RS Plus has finally arrived. the German carmaker has just released the first official info and a massive photo gallery of the new model, that will be made available in both coupe and roadster configurations. The car is powered by the well-known 2.5-litre 5-cylider TSFI engine with direct injection equipping the ‘regular’ TT RS, but its delivery has been boosted to 360 hp and 465 Nm of peak torque, marking a +20 hp and a +15 Nm over the output of its ‘plus-less” counterpart. This unit, in combination with its S-Tronic ‘dual clutch’ transmission, allows the car to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in just 4.1 seconds (4.2 seconds for the roadster), with a limited top speed of 280 km/h (173 mph). A 6-speed manual transmission option is also available, but with this gearbox the TT RS Plus loses a little in terms of performance as the 100 km/h mark is reached in 4.3 seconds by the coupe and 4.4 seconds by the roadster.

The model obviously uses an all wheel drive powertrain and boasts an average fuel consumption of 8.5 l/100 km for its coupe variant and 8.6 for the convertible. Thanks to its light bodyshell, 2/3 of which is made of aluminum, the Coupe version with manual gearbox weighs only 1,450 kg, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 4.0 kg/hp (4.2 for the Roadster). The Audi TT RS Plus rolls on exclusive 19″ burnished alloys with contrasting red outline, fitted with 255/35 tyres and coupled to 4-piston calipers on the front axle. “Magnetic Ride” suspension are also available as an optional extra.

Aesthetically, the Audi TT RS Plus distinguishes itself from the “regular” TT RS by its glossy single-frame grill, the wing mirror shells made of CFRP, the matt aluminum outline of its diffuser, the front lip spoiler and its burnished oval-shaped mufflers. By the way, the ’sound’ of the car can be adjusted by acting on the flaps integrated in the exhaust system. Even more dynamic: the Audi TT RS plus

Even more powerful, even faster, even more dynamic: Early 2012 will see the launch of the Audi TT RS plus. This compact sports car, in both Coupé and Roadster versions, stands out for its awe-inspiring performance. Its power-boosted five-cylinder turbo delivers 265 kW (360 hp), sufficient for a top speed of 280 km/h (173.98 mph).

The 2.5-liter TFSI in the Audi TT RS plus is a high-performance engine. Compared with the engine on which it is based, this turbocharged direct-injection unit delivers 15 kW (20 hp) more power. It produces 465 Nm (342.97 lb-ft) of torque, 15 Nm (11.06 lb-ft) more than before. Customers can choose between a manual six-speed transmission and the seven-speed S tronic with its lightning-fast gearshifts. The dual-clutch transmission comes with a launch control function which optimizes acceleration from a standing start. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, which operates with a multi-plate clutch, transfers engine power to the road in supreme style.

The TT RS plus unites dynamics and efficiency in a most impressive way. Against the backdrop of the five-cylinder engine’s characteristic roaring and growling, the Coupé with S tronic catapults from a standstill to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.1 seconds (with manual transmission: 4.3 seconds). The Roadster completes the same exercise in 4.2 seconds (with manual transmission: 4.4 seconds). Top speed is limited to 280 km/h (173.98 mph) for all versions of the car. The Coupé with S tronic uses an average of just 8.5 liters of fuel per 100 km (27.67 US mpg); the Roadster uses 8.6 liters per 100 km (27.35 US mpg).

Alongside numerous efficiency-improving measures, these top figures are due primarily to the extremely lightweight Audi Space Frame (ASF) bodies made of aluminum at the front and sheet steel at the rear. The Coupé with manual transmission, including quattro drive, weighs just 1,450 kilograms (3,196.70 lb); its power-to-weight ratio is 4.0 kilograms (8.82 lb) per horsepower. The power-to-weight ratio of the Roadster is 4.2 kilograms (9.26 lb) per horsepower.

The high-performance brake system is able to cope with the engine’s power at all times. Four-piston fixed calipers in conjunction with perforated brake disks are installed on the front axle. The Audi TT RS plus is fitted with 19-inch cast wheels of five-arm “Rotor” design; they are painted black with contrasting red rim flanges. The wheels are fitted with 255/35 tires. The adaptive damping system known as Audi magnetic ride is available as an option. A large, fixed rear wing increases downforce at the back of the car.

The Singleframe radiator grille also sets the Audi TT RS plus apart visually: Its diamond-pattern mesh is in highly polished anthracite, its trim frame has a matt aluminum-look finish. The housings of the exterior mirrors are made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). The dual-branch sport exhaust system has black oval tailpipe trims. A sound flap further intensifies the sound of the engine. The Carbon design package gives the engine compartment a more exclusive look. The knob on the gear or selector lever features an aluminum-look trim ring and a TT RS plus badge.

The TT RS plus Coupé with manual transmission costs €60,650 in Germany or €62,800 with the seven-speed S tronic . The TT RS plus Roadster has a list price of €63,500 or €65,650 respectively.

This lot of spy shots comes once again from cold Northern Scandinavia, and the mule wearing that heavy cammo is the new Citroen C4 Sedan, a three-box version of the popular French family car. The current C4 Sedan is sold mostly in China, but with other small sedans popping up, from different manufactures (we had some Opel Astra Sedan spy photos just yesterday) it is possible that this car will find its way in several European markets.

Apparently, in countries like Italy and Spain and in Eastern Europe, the smaller sedan segment is experiencing a certain growth, and some European manufacturer might want to exploit the moment. As for the engine range, we expect the power to come from the well-known units that are already fitted in the other C4 models.

Opel Astra’s line-up is going to welcome yet another addition in the form of a brand new three-box sedan. The mule pictured in these spy shots sports a mildy disguised rear end that let us understand pretty well the sort of the design the final model will use, and quite frankly there’s nothing really exciting there. This kind of body-type hasn’t been successful in Europe for quite a while, and at the moment it is unclear whether Opel will have it marketed in these countries.

The Opel Astra sedan is expected to borrow the same engine range of the hatchback, meaning the naturally aspirated 1.4- and 1.6-litre (producing 100 and 115 hp respectively), a turbocharged 1.4 litre unit delivering 140 hp and, possibly, the 180 hp supercharged 1.6 too. As for diesel options, there is a 95 hp 1.3 and a 1.7-litre unit available in three power steps, 110, 125 and 130 hp, this last one with standard start-stop system. At the moment, the inclusion in the range of the powerful 2.0-litre CDTI unit (producing 165 hp) seems quite unlikely.

The Lamborghini Museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese is the focus of the sixth part of this documentary exploring this maker’s history and production from an insider’s point of view.

Born in 2001, this very impressive museum covers the entire history of the exclusive car maker in all its aspects. The photo gallery highlights Lamborghini’s milestones and it includes black and white stills of old production lines as well as advertising shots and pictures of all the different vehicles.

Within the historical models on display on the ground floor you can find some gems such as the first 350 GT built by Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1963, the Miura S, the Espada, the Urraco and the Silhouette as well as some prototypes such as the Countach 001 and the Lamborghini LM 002. On the other hand the first floor is dedicated to more contemporary vehicles such as design, concept, exotic and racing cars. It also includes an area displaying everything you need to know about Lamborghini’s marine motors such as the Toro.

Hyundai has introduced the new Elantra GT hatchback and Elantra Coupe at the ongoing 2012 Chicago Auto Show, unleashing at the same time a first lot of official images of the two models on the internet. The pair comes with the same 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine that powers the Elantra sedan - delivering 150 hp and 177 Nm of torque - that can be coupled to either a manual or an automatic 6-speed transmission.

The Elantra GT weighs only 1,265 kg, a feature that allows it to be quick and responsive even though the engine is not that performing. It comes with 17″ alloys and a sporty set-up that makes it extremely stable. In the cabin we have heated seats, seven air bags, sound system with Bluetooth connectivity and even a cooled glove compartment. For this model the Korean carmaker claims an average fuel consumption of 7.3 l/100km in urban traffic and 6.0 l/100km when traveling on motorways.

The Elantra Coupe will be available in two versions: the ‘GS’ and the more well-equipped SE. The main features of the former are a set of 16″ wheels and a quite minimal interior with mp3 player and 6 speakers. The SE instead will roll on standard 17″ rims and an optional sat-nav system with a 7″ touch screen and a rear view camera. The Coupe will come in seven different colors - three of which are available for this model exclusively -and black or gray interior finishing. No word on prices yet.

The heavily disguised mule featured in these spy shots from Northern Sweden is the new Kia K9, a new sedan based on the same rear wheel drive platform of the Hyundai Genesis that some people on the internet call ‘the South Korean answer to the Maserati Quattroporte‘. That’s a bit of an exaggeration, isn’t it? Still, the next flagship for the Korean manufacturer will come with an engine line-up that does sound quite promising: a 3.8-litre V6 delivering 333 hp, a 4.6-litre V8 delivering 385 hp and also a 5.0-litre V8 producing 429 hp. The V8 units will be available in North America only while a diesel powertrain is also in the works to rise more interest among European motorists. The new K9 will come with a standard 8-speed automatic transmission, but a 10-speed gearbox option is also being developed.

Rumor has it that the car will eventually adopt the name ‘Opirus’ and will complete Kia’s three-box line up that features the Forte (C-segment), Optima/K5 (D-segment) and Cadenza/K7 (E-segment). Aesthetically, this car seams to bear some resemblance with the GT Concept we had seen at the latest Frankfurt Motor Show (see gallery below), while the headlights seem to be using full-Led technology. Kia K9/Oprusl is expected to debut by the end of the current year.

Aston Martin has released more official pictures of the definitive version of their V12 Zagato, which is due to enter the market by the end of this year. This new hand-built coupe, which was initially introduced as a concept car at the Concorso d’Eleganza in Villa D’Este, Italy, in May 2011, has already taken part at the Nurburgring 24 hours and will hit the showrooms with a price tag of 405.000 £ (roughly 485.000 €). The actual launch of the production model will be staged next week at the Kuwait’s Concours d’Elegance, while the actual production of the scheduled 150 units will begin in September.

The Aston Martin V12 Zagato was born to celebrate the 50 years of collaboration between Aston Martin and renowned Italian designer Zagato, and is the brainchild of Aston Martin’s main designer Marek Reichmann, who stresses out the fact that the model is pretty different from the other Astons: it has the ‘double hump’ on the roof (one of Zagato’s trademark features) and a convex front grille that - in the words of Mr.Reichmann himself - ‘makes it look like it is wearing a shirt that’s just too tight to hide its muscles‘.

The Aston Martin V12 Zagato is powered by the same 5.9-litre V12 engine equipping the V12 Vantage, which is credited with an output of 517 hp and 570 Nm of peak torque at 5,750 rpm. This unit is coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox that uses a transaxle configuration to aid weight distribution. The V12 Zagato boasts a 0-100 km/h (62mph) sprint time of 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 306 km/h (190 mph). ASTON MARTIN’S FIRST PRODUCTION V12 ZAGATO TO DEBUT AT KUWAIT CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE

Gaydon (27 January 2012 ) — Aston Martin will debut the first production V12 Zagato at the Kuwait Concours d’ Elegance on 15-18 February.

The Kuwait Concours d’Elegance, in its third successive year, is the only event of its type in the Middle East and plays host to some of the world’s finest automotive art from over 19 countries. Having gone from strength to strength in the past two years, this event has become the earliest of its type in what is considered by car connoisseurs as ‘the season’.

At the heart of such an established and important market for Aston Martin, the Kuwait Concours d’Elegance this year is supported by Premier International Motors Group, Aston Martin’s dealer partner in Kuwait.

Dr Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin said “We are excited to show the new V12 Zagato for the first time in production form at the Kuwait Concours d’Elegance. Over 50 years since the introduction of the iconic DB4GT Zagato, Aston Martin and Zagato have collaborated to create this modern interpretation which remains true to the original focus of craftsmanship, performance and exclusivity.”

The V12 Zagato, being built in strictly limited numbers of up to 150 cars, is due for first customer deliveries in late 2012. Carrying on the partnership between Aston Martin and Zagato that started over 50 years ago with the DB4 GT Zagato, the V12 Zagato, hand assembled at the company’s global headquarters in Gaydon, England, is based on the highly acclaimed V12 Vantage and features a beautiful hand-crafted aluminium and carbon fibre body along with a bespoke interior. Combining traditional craftsmanship and high technology, the V12 Zagato also boasts Aston Martin’s most dynamic bonded aluminium platform and the power of the company’s acclaimed 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 510 bhp (380 kW / 517 PS), and 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque.

Launched successfully, in prototype form, in late May 2011 at the Villa D’Este Concours on Lake Como, Italy, the V12 Zagato saw off tough competition to be awarded the coveted Design Award for the concept and prototypes class. Just a week later, the V12 Zagato made its racing debut at the at the historic Nürburgring racetrack before the two prototypes were entered into the gruelling Nürburgring 24 Hour race - both taking the chequered flag to maintain the marque’s 100% finish record in the race.

Being judged within the Kuwait Concours d’Elegance is a number of rare and historic Aston Martins from private owners across the world. One such car is an original DB4GT Zagato, one of the finest examples of the first partnership between Aston Martin and Zagato.

The spiritual inspiration for the contemporary V12 Zagato, the DB4GT Zagato came to fruition just over 50 years ago when Aston Martin sought to remove even more weight from the very special DB4GT. In the search of an ever lighter and higher performance version, Aston Martin approached Zagato, a company renowned for such projects. Managing Director, Elio Zagato and Technical Director Gianni Zagato along with a talented team managed to draft the main designs of the DB4GT Zagato in just one week. Of the original 19 DB4GT Zagato built, all still survive and are held in pride of place within some of the world’s greatest car collections.

Following extremely positive initial customer reaction, the V12 Zagato is currently being offered for sale at £330,000 GBP (excluding local taxes).

When we first saw the Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet Concept (pictured) at the Worthersee Tour last summer, we thought that - giant rims aside - the model had little or nothing to do with what a concept car is supposed to be. It was pretty clear that that car could have been turned into a production-ready model with just a handful of mild corrections and, according to Auto Express, this is exactly what is about to happen. Apparently, the definitive VW Golf GTI Cabriolet will be premiered at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show (March 8-18) and will be basically identical to the ‘regular’ model it is based upon, with the obvious exception of the chopped off roof. This means that the model will make use of the same 211 hp 2.0-litre TFSI engine 211 CV and DSG dual clutch transmission of the current VW Golf GTI.

The fifth episode of this Lamborghini documentary focuses on the Gallardo, and in particular on two models: the Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Leggera and the Gallardo Spyder.

The Super Leggera’s structure can be summed up in an ultra-light body stretched over a tubular frame, and thanks to the extensive use of carbon fibre this vehicle has been crowned the lightest in the Lamborghini range. With a top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph), the LP 570-4 Super Leggera only comes second to the Aventador in terms of performance.

The Gallardo Spyder was first unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show as an “al fresco” version of the v10 super sports car. Needless to say, watching this video only makes you wish you could jump immediately in one of these jewels and spend the rest of your life cruising from riviera to riviera.

Here are some spy shots of the much anticipated BMW i8, the hybrid plug-in sportscar which is scheduled to enter the market in 2014. The pictured mule has been spotted while undergoing some cold weather test in snowy Sweden, and doesn’t seem to show any dramatic change in comparison to the concept version we had seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in September.

The mildly disguised bodywork of this mule is still very reminiscent of the lines showcased by the concept, with the most notable differences being the design of both front and tail lights and the slightly different doors. This prototype sports a front end that seems to adopt the new BMW design language that started with the new 3-series, while a set of more conventional rims has replaced the futuristic 5-spoke design we had seen on the concept version. However, by the time 2014 will come, they might decide to change some of these features.

The BMW i8 should come with a 2+2 seat configuration and a plug-in hybrid powertrain with the classic engine mounted in the middle and the electric motor on the front axle. Some performance figures are also circulating: 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration in less than 5 seconds and an average fuel consumption in the 3 l/100 km area.

Nissan will introduce a restyled version of its 370Z at the imminent 2012 Chicago Auto Show (February 10-19) and, as the tradition dictates, the carmaker has just released on the web a large photo gallery starring the new car. The model - firstly introduced at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show - receives some small cosmetic upgrade but no relevant changes to its powertrain, which was excellent in the first place anyway.

The ‘cosmetic upgrades’ of this face-lifted version are the new LED stripes integrated in the front bumper, the addition of new 18″ and 19″ alloys to the previous range and some more color option for the livery, that’s it. Just like the model it is about to replace, the restyled 370Z will be available in both coupe and roadster body types, and will come with its signature 3.7-litre naturally aspirated V6 engine credited with an output of 328 hp. This unit can be coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters.

Three years after the launch of the latest generation, Mercedes introduces a restyled version of its E-Class, dubbing it ‘model year 2012′. The large sedan of the three-pointed star house expands its offer aiming at a younger and more dynamic custom-base, promising a more sporty and exciting driving experience. This doesn’t mean that Mercedes is adding more versions to the already large E-Class family, they actually did quite the opposite: in an attempt to simplify things, they have reduced the number of the variants, but those which survived the slashing will get a fairly enriched standard equipment. However, the classic Mercedes-Benz’s partition in three levels of equipment - Executive, Elegance and Avantgarde - is still in place.

The entry level version now comes with ILS bi-xenon lights, LED daylight strips and new 17″ alloys, which join features such as the multifunctional steering wheel and the advanced info-tainment system with Bluetooth connectivity in the standard equipment. All that already makes it quite a rich entry level model. The Elegance trim confirms its more comfort-oriented attitude, while the new Avantgarde variant pushes the boundaries of its sporty feeling even further: the car now includes in its standard equipment the AMG Exterior Sport Package, 18” 5-spoke alloy wheels, an upgraded braking system with bigger discs and Mercedes-branded calipers and also a lowered ride height. All models will come with two trapezoid shaped mufflers.

In the cabin we find some pretty interesting addition too: Mercedes’ own Comand Online - the innovative browser-based app solution that provides users with access to several connected services such as Google POI search, weather, full internet browsing and the likes - is now standard for all E-Class models, as is the three-spoke steering wheel borrowed from the CLS. Besides, in order to emphasize the new-found sporty attitude of the whole range, AMG packages will be made available for both Executive and Elegance trim levels. The package include AMG sports steering wheel, AMG 18″ or 19″ alloys, sporty seats, aluminum pedals and lowered ride height.

Here’s the fourth part of this amazing Lamborghini documentary, and today we explore what’s going on behind closed doors at the Lamborghini factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese. These historic premises at the moment accomodate more or less 850 employees, who work meticulously to produce the iconic super sports cars in an environment as neat and clean as an operating theatre.

Lamborghini’s exclusive production line only delivers an average of a dozen units a day and features a mixture of hi-tech and hand craftsmanship, which ensures vehicles are assembled to the highest quality standards.

Fiat releases new official images, a video (after the jump) and more info about their new Punto, which is just about to debut on the market. The revamped 2012 version of the Fiat Punto is something more than a mere restyling: the term ‘restyling’ in fact wouldn’t do justice to the sort of heavy upgrade that the long-running Fiat hatchback has just endured, which affected the model in both shape and content. The new range comes with a new engine line-up too, making it even clearer that the new range represents a huge step forward in the comparison to the outgoing Punto Evo series. From an aesthetic point of view the new Punto for the year 2012 retrieves some elements of the more successful Grande Punto series, that debuted in 2005: the rear bumper in fact loses the contrasting insert, the indicators move closer to the air intake and the redesigned front bumper is now painted in the same color of the fairing. By the way, three new exterior colors have been added to the paint options: Blu Profondo (Deep Blue), Rosso Elegante (Elegant Red) and Grigio Affascinante (Fascinating Gray). Besides, the car now rolls on new 15″ alloy wheels.

As for the engine range, the 2012 Fiat Punto (which has no ‘Grande’ or ‘Evo’ tags attached to its name) will be made available with the following petrol options: a new 0.9-litre TwinAir unit delivering 85 hp at 5,500 rpm and 145 Nm from 2,000 giri/min; a 1.2-litre producing 69 hp; a 77 hp 1.4; a 1.4-litre MultiAir engine producing 105 hp and 1.4 MultiAir Turbo producing 135 hp. On the diesel side we have a brand new 1.3-litre Multijet II unit available in three power configurations - 75, 85 and 95 hp - while for the bi-fuel team we have petrol/LPG and petrol/methane powertrains combined with the aforementioned naturally aspirated 1.4-litre engine. All these engines will come with standard Start-Stop system and gear shift indicator.

The newly added 0.9-litre TwinAir unit boasts an average fuel consumption of 24 km/l, with CO2 emissions rated at 98 g/km only. The customer that will choose this engine will also be given an extra option for color of the livery, the exclusive Verde Energetico (Energetic Green), which can be mated to a black rooftop. The whole range will be available in three versions - Comfort, Sport and Fun to Drive - each one of which will be available in six different trims: the more traditional ‘Pop’, ‘Easy’ and ‘Lounge’, the dynamic ‘Racing’ and ‘Sport’ and, for those more focused on the ‘green’ side of things, the ‘TwinAir’.

BMW has released more official images of the new Mini Roadster, which was unveiled a few weeks ago at the 2012 NAIAS of Detroit. The model will be marketed in the usual Mini configurations: Cooper (122 hp and 160 Nm of torque), Cooper S (184 hp and 240 Nm), Cooper SD (143 hp and 305 Nm) and John Cooper Works (211 hp and 260 Nm). This JCW is the one sitting at the top of the Roadster range, credited with a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of 6,5 seconds and a top speed of 237 km/h (137 mph).

The Mini Roadster comes with a manually operated fabric soft top, stainless steel roll-over bars and an active rear spoiler that automatically pops up when cruising speed crosses the 80 km/h (50 mph) threshold, just like the Coupe. As usual, Mini offers plenty of options for the customization of the car, including seven different types of alloys, three kinds of seats and a variety of colors for the exterior, namely Pepper White, Chili Red, White Silver, Lightning Blue, Midnight Black, British Racing Green, Spice Orange and Eclipse Grey. Besides, longitudinal sporty stripes can also be placed on the bonnet.

The overlong list of optional extras for the Mini Roadster also includes a 6 speed automatic transmission, bi-xenon head lights, leather upholstery, a Harman Kardon hi-fi loudspeaker system with USB audio interface, wind protection insert between the roll-over bars and then some.

What we have here is a bunch of spy shots picturing a Skoda Superb prototype equipped with Scout parts, which has been spotted together with a mule of the production version of the VisionD concept car. Rumors of a Superb Scout model have been floating around for quite some time, and we suspect that the car has probably been ready for almost as long as these rumors have, but as usual it’s Skoda’s parent company Volkswagen that makes the decisions, and it is likely that VW wanted to find a better time to introduce this model in order to not get in the way of their own Passat Alltrack.

In light of the fact that it is Volkswagen making the rules here, we guess that Skoda will not be allowed to use the 170 hp TDI engine for their Superb Scout. Chances are that the model will end up using the less performing 140 hp TDI unit, but at this moment there is no official information on this topic. The Superb Scout is expected to share engines and drivetrains with the ‘regular’ Superb 4×4.

The commercial starring the new Kia Soul that got aired during the recent XLVI SuperBowl was nothing new as it was honored by the Nielsen Automotive Advertising Awards as“Automotive Ad of the Year” last June. This ad is staged in a modern day metropolis populated by hamsters, where a few of them dressed up as hip-hop stars hang around in the city with their new South Korean crossover, with a background tune blasting off the speakers. Surely a nice ad that deserved a re-run.

The Kia Soul was unveiled at the latest New York Motor Show and is available with either a 122 hp 1.6-litre engine coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 2.0-litre unit producing 142 horsepower that can be mated to a the same 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.
